‘Scarred but not Broken’
The inspiration for this painting arose when I was sitting in my car after exploring the Dandenong Botanical Gardens. That day and leading up to it - I was experiencing a lot of pain, sadness and depression. I felt overwhelmed with anxious feelings and was in quite a dark place. I decided I needed space to be in nature and that’s what I did. I filmed my day as it was the only way I could really motivate myself to get out of bed. I am very grateful I did.
I had this ripped canvas in my studio for months, after it fell when my studio flooded. It was at that point in the car where I decided I was just going to paint it. Even though it’s ripped I figured I could incorporate it into the final product and that’s exactly what I did.
This painting was a beautiful journey into the depth of my emotions. I’m sure you felt it while watching the creation of it. I started out with black because it felt right. I didn’t want to have to deal with cleaning brushes so I used my hands… and I only used my hands in creating this artwork. It felt so therapeutic and the freedom to throw the paint at the canvas. To let out the feelings that had been kept locked inside for some time. As I progressed with the piece I felt so much lighter and a deep level of peace washed over my body, heart and soul.
I was inspired by Kintsugi which is the Japanese art of putting broken pieces of pottery back together with gold. This really resonated with me as it is built on the idea of embracing imperfections and our flaws, which reflected on how I was feeling at the time. That our scars are part of us and beautiful. They can make us stronger and show us where we’ve come from and what we’ve overcome.
This piece serves as a reminder that even in our darkest, lowest and most painful points in our life we are never broken. We are always whole - always enough.
This painting wouldn’t exist if I had not felt the depth of my emotions that transferred into this artwork.
I filmed the process, not thinking too much about the final product. Once I started editing, I began to feel that this is the most powerful piece of art I have ever created.
‘‘Fine Line’ By Harry Styles fits perfectly to the vision that I was creating for this Artistic Music Video. I listened to the song for the first time after completing the piece and was incredibly moved by his song.
To me it speaks on the fine line between the various emotions we experience - sadness, happiness, joy, anger, loneliness and oneness. With the dark times comes light, the dark is necessary in order to see the light. Notice how the song starts off quite sad and moves into acceptance and then peace.
“We’ll be alright”
“We’ll be alright”
Through my creative expression, I experienced these vast range of emotions at various points whilst the piece was coming to life. I cultivated a deep level of inner peace and clarity in my studio.
It’s not that we should always strive for happiness in this lifetime, as that’s unattainable. Rather to live peacefully and hold a level of inner peace, as we continue to navigate this life. By accepting all emotions and feeling them to our depth while still carrying peace in our heart.
That’s the game changer.
Harry is an incredible artist and I feel deeply inspired by his music.
Thank you for watching and being part of this journey with me.
